resources for making it as an artist

During the gathering at Arrowmont, we had a round table discussion about making it as an artist today. I am looking for more links, advice, and helpful tips towards creating and continuing our creative careers. Can any provide this information/ links here as a resource?

Thank you

Collaboration Idea and Collage #1

Hi everybody,

I have an idea for a collaboration if any of you embroiderers are interested?  Maybe we could work on an embroidery together and I (or we) can print from it?  It can be one of those things where we pass it back and forth or around to whom ever else wants to embroider on it.  It can be organic and unplanned....add whatever you like kind of thing?  Any takers?  It would be nice to get started soon since embroidery is such a time consuming process.  We could work small to speed up the process too?  Maybe an 11 x14?  Any takers??

Thanks, Anna

Also, I just posted a short update about another project I'm planning to work on during our retreat on my blog.  You can read more about it here if you're interested: annakeck.wordpress.com.

Here is the first composition that I plan to print from.  (I will create an embroidery from this collage and use it as a printing plate.)

Kim Eichler-Messmer - Introduction

Hi Everyone! I am so excited about our upcoming retreat. It's going to be so much fun and I can't wait to meet everyone.

I was a resident in 2007/08 and now I am an Assistant Professor in the Fiber Department at the Kansas City Art Institute. Primarily I am a quilt maker (see my work here) but during the retreat I plan on doing some screen printed yardage. Like Anna, I am interested in making some work inspired by the history of Arrowmont. During my residency we worked with Karen on some Arrowmont artifacts including a couple of woven coverlets. I would love to translate the coverlet patterns into two or three color silk screens and print them on yardage. In my own studio work I have been trying to squeeze in time to print quilt patterns like this:
That could then be turned into whole cloth quilts.

Anna Keck - Introduction

Hi, Everybody!  I was a resident from 1994-95.  I'm looking forward to attending this creative retreat and meeting you all.  A little about me....I'm working full time as a Studio Technician in the Fibers Dept. at SCAD in Savannah, GA.  I've also recently purchased a (major) house renovation project, so between the two commitments, I admit...I'm not in the studio as much as I would like to be!  (I do find time to satisfy my creative itch every once in a while...just not as often as I would like!)

You can learn more about me and my work at my BLOG (annakeck.wordpress.com).  My latest post is about this retreat and the beginning stages of researching for my print edition that I'm planning to work on.  I'm really inspired by the history of Arrowmont, and it is from this platform for which I plan to jump from conceptually.  It is my goal to post on my blog as ideas arise while doing my research in the next few weeks leading up to our retreat.  Since my process of working is so time consuming, I'm planning to get an early start with stitching my "printing plates", and I will be sharing my progress on my blog.

I hope more of you take time to post to this Blog and introduce yourself!  Thank you, Sarah, for getting it started!

Here are a few pics I found to share:
